Configuring Ubiquity Wired and Wireless networks

In this post we will discuss how to setup and configure a Uniquity UniFi network for the purpose of facilitating communication between Leviton products. The high level steps are outlined below with additional details that can be found in the attached video.

Pre-requisites:
  1. Download UniFi app to you phone
  2. Create an account if necessary and log into the app
  3. Identify the location of the "Gateway" which will either be the Unifi "Dream Machine Pro" or "USG". If the Dream Machine Pro was provided, it will be installed in an equipment room.
  4. Confirm the gateway is powered up, and, any access points are connected and powered up.
  5. Confirm cables between the gateway and any switches are installed and connected, everything at this point should be powered-up
  6. Identify IS/IT team preferences if any; modify defaults below as appropriate
Site creation and gateway initial provisioning
  1. Open app, login, and navigate to site manger
  2. Click + button to add a new site
    1. Your gateway should show up in the list with the option to "set it up now." If it doesn't, power cycle it
  3. Follow instructions to setup gateway

  4. Enter site name in the format [Project Name ] - [Project Number]
    1. Ex: Bethel 19 - 222402
  5. Enter Password
    1. Scan the QR code on the back of the gateway and use it's unique identifier as the password.
  6. Wait for console setup to complete and select "Finish"
  7. Finish
Site Configuration
  1. Connect your laptop into the LAN port of the gateway
  2. Log into the gateway using the IP Address located on the touchscreen
  3. Navigate to Network Application->Unify Devices
  4. Adopt all devices, wait for adoption to complete. Resolve any issues
  5. Configure the network: Navigate to Setup->Networks and select the "default" network
  6. Verify your subnet size based on the number of devices you intend to connect to
  7. Change your host IP address to
    1. 172.30.0.1
  8. Modify DHCP Settings
    1. Adjust the lower end of the DHCP range to start at 172.30.0.21
    2. Enable DHCP Guarding, set DHCP server to 172.30.0.1
    3. Set domain name to LevitonControls.Lan
    4. If Customer Hosted My Building, set DHCP option 166 to 172.30.0.10
  9. Save all above settings -
    1. Note -Switches, Access Points, etc. will take some time to get a new IP address. Wait for them all to come back online before continuing. You can power cycle everything all switches and AP's to speed up the process.
  10. Configure Wi-Fi
    1. Navigate to Settings->Wi-Fi
    2. Set SSID to
      1. Leviton Controls
    3. Set Password to unique, that is also easy to type ex:
      1. The.Smart.Choice.Bethel.Furfurmonger
  11. Setup complete!
  12. Document all settings in your Field Service Report
You now can go connect your DRC Room Controllers to the network!
