What's the difference between a device, node, & point?

The above three terms are often inappropriately used interchangably and oft distinctly. What are they? How are they the same...and different? What is the correct terminology? These are the questions we'll address in this article.

Device
Represents an enrolled device in a DRC Room Controller. At time of this writing, DRC Wired Room Controllers support up to 100 devices and Wireless up to 60. The following all count as a single device:
  • Smart Pack/Relay, ex: DRD07-ED0
  • Single channel in a multi-channel phase cut dimmer (DRDDP-A40/A20)
  • Digital Sensor - Occupancy / Photocell
  • Keypad
  • Single channel in 2 channel AI (DRID0-C02)
  • Single DALI Device enrolled by LumaCAN Channel (DRCDD)
  • DALI Device color control, enrolled by LumaCAN Channel
  • Single DMX Channel enrolled by LumaCAN Channel (NP00G)
  • Single Relay in a GreenMAX Relay Cabinet enrolled by LumaCAN Channel

Node
A node is a thing that is connected to the LumaCAN network. If the connected thing has multiples dimmers, relays, etc. it counts as a single node. LumaCAN networks support only 110 nodes between ports on a repeater, the maximum number of nodes is 250. The following count as a single node:
  • Smart Pack/Relay, ex: DRD07-ED0
  • Multi-channel phase cut dimmer (DRDDP-A40/A20)
  • Digital Sensor - Occupancy / Photocell
  • Keypad
  • 2 channel AI (DRID0-C02)
  • DALI Gateway (DRCDD)
  • NP00G LumaCAN Gateway
  • GreenMAX Relay Cabinet MPU
  • GreenMAX Relay Cabinet AI
Point
The term Point is most commonly used in our BACnet interfaces, however, it's also used for billing purposes for the My Building software suite. It represents the most finite level of control or reporting from any system. It's nearly identical to device with only a couple of exceptions (noted by bold). Each of the below counts as a single point:
  • Smart Pack/Relay, ex: DRD07-ED0
  • Single channel in a multi-channel phase cut dimmer (DRDDP-A40/A20)
  • Digital Sensor - Occupancy Sensor
  • Digital Sensor - Photocell
  • Keypad Button (could be 1, 2, 4, or 8 points per device)
  • Single channel in 2 channel AI (DRID0-C02)
  • Single DALI Device enrolled by LumaCAN Channel (DRCDD)
  • DALI Device color control, enrolled by LumaCAN Channel
  • Single DMX Channel enrolled by LumaCAN Channel (NP00G)
  • Single Relay in a GreenMAX Relay Cabinet enrolled by LumaCAN Channel
