Pulse meters with 10Wh load LED

It is possible to perform a high-level review a pulse meter's energy registration with the 10Wh load LED. An electrician should be consulted to help with this review as our metering devices will have panel level service voltages present at each device.
Always refer to the manuals of the products being reviewed for pertinent safety information and locating the load LED. Some meters may not have a load LED, so instead it is possible to use certain meter datapoints as an alternative, like the energy (kWh) reading and how much it increased over a time period.

By turning on or off a large load downstream of the meter, the LED will blink relative to the amount of power being drawn. This may help you trace whether a meter is labeled for monitoring the expected location or load. This is not intended to be used as an in-place meter system accuracy test.

An electrician with an amp clamp can check each CT that goes to one meter. With a decent loading, the load LED will blink based off the amount of current draw.

While this doesn't directly work for AC loads, using the equation volts * amps = watts , one can ballpark the kW of the sum of all the circuits and then verify the load LED blink rate is within reasonable agreement.

The more load, the faster the blink rate; so it may help to be able to vary the load by turning on a large, ideally resistive load like a range, space heater, or dryer. Non-fully resistive loads will be slightly slower in registering energy consumption.


Refer to the manual of the product, but on many Leviton products, the load LED remain on for 5 watt hours, then off for 5 watt hours. Using a stopwatch, record the time between transitions to understand the amount of power (kilowatts) the meter is seeing used across all of the CTs. The table below will assist you in the conversion. Note that these are ideal numbers; with manual timing and the type of load, some amount of variance with the timing is expected.
