Why are 2 terminal screws on CS415 4-way toggle switches black?

Newbie

Is there more than one correct way to connect the travelers from the 3-way switches to the terminals on 4-way switches? I'm confused by the 2 black screws on one end of the 4-way, and the use of 2-wire cables. Does the black/white mount on the sides? or top and bottom? The diagrams on the inside of the package suggest that each of the four terminals require the correct traveler, in order to work properly, but I can find no clues to the what and why of the connections. I know I presently have wired it incorrectly.

The first step to properly wiring a 4-way is to identify your wires.

Find the 2 traveler wires that "leave" each 3-way switch.

One set will go to the left side of the 4-way, the second set will be wired to the right side, see diagram below.

Dont focus on the color of the terminal screws.

But again, you will need to identify the 4 travelers, common wire (carries electricity from your service panel) and load wire (brings electricity to the light).
