Do I need to cover the back of a in ceiling speaker?

Depending on the space the speaker is going into you may need to cover the back of the speaker. If you are putting the speaker into a attic ceiling that has "spray in" or " loose" insulation you will want to put some kind of basic cover over the back of the speaker, a simple piece of plastic over the back and stapled or taped into place is sufficient. It does not need to seal, it is only provided some basic separation so as to keep the insulation from working its way into the speakers cone area. If the inceiling speaker is going into a space with roll style insulation no seperation is needed. There is also a optional Fire Rated Back Box enclosure that will work for a 6.5" speaker that is going into plenum or fire rated ceiling space (AEBC6-000)
