I am replacing a single pole switch with a VPT 24

The switch I am replacing has only two black wires going to the switch but there was a white (neutral I believe) wire in the box going to another swicth. I connected the wiring exactly as shown for the single pole application by tapping the white wire on the switch into the white wire in the back of the box and then connecting black to black and red to black.

I have tried a couple of other wire combinations but while the timer works fine and progreams fine the lights will not come on. The lights also do not come on when I try to override and they are much less than 300 feet away.

Please advise how i might connect the wires to make this work.

VPT 24 Black to ________, White to _____, Red to _________ . Does yellow/red still remain unused in this circumstance?
