What connects to what?

I am getting ready to build a home and wire the CAT5e and RG6 Quad myself. I have purchased a 42" Leviton SMC, a Leviton 476TM-524 Patch Panel, a Leviton 47611-GT4 Router, a Leviton 47605-DP AC Power Module, a Leviton 47611-8PT Ethernet Switch and a Leviton 47693-16P CATV Module, all on recommendation from Leviton and their system design service. We will not have phone service from the phone company because we don't use a house phone but we will have service run to the house to help future proof the house. My questions are these.

1) What connects where? How are the router, patch panel and the switch all hooked together? I understand that the CAT5e wires from the RJ45 wall jacks throughout the house will be run to and punched down to the back side of the patch panel. But how do I get the internet service to the patch panel for it to distribute to the 24 CAT5e lines hooked to the back? I looked for a video on your website but couldn't find one. I did find one that might have helped but when I clicked on the link it said it was not available. Do I use a patch cord from one of the ports on the switch or router to plug into one of the ports on the patch panel? If so, will that distribute the signal to the rest of the ports on the patch panel? Or do I need to connect each port on the patch panel that I want internet to, to the router or switch with patch cords? If so, how do I do that without enough ports on the router and switch? Any drawings, diagrams or videos would be greatly appreciated!

2) Is there a recommended placement of all these components inside the 42" SMC? I will be using a cable modem I have purchased previously and am currently using to get cable and internet from the local cable company.

3) Do I hook the cable modem to the switch or the router or does it matter?

4) T568A or T568B?

This will do for now. I'm sure I will have more questions but this is a good start.

The EZ-RJ45 connector 47613-EZC will accept 24-26 AWG wire.

47611-GT4 Router (Version 3) DNS Settings

We recently installed the 47611-GT4 (v2) router to terminate a cable modem. We opted to use the default settings and make no configuration changes. Our clients received IP addresses within the 192.168.0.x space, however, the client's DNS server IP address setting was 192.168.1.1. Strange thing is that this IP address does not exist. As a result, client browsing stops working because the client is trying to use a non-existant DNS server. After logging onto router to review DHCP DNS settings, the only option is the DNS proxy checkbox, which was selected. Is this a bug?

Setting up the Internet Router (Version 3) for DSL, FIOS, or Satellite Internet

These instructions pertain ONLY to Version 3 of the 47611-GT4 Internet Router. To determine which version you have, click here.

Important note: Most DSL modems have a built-in router functionality. In most cases, adding a second router (such as a Leviton router) will cause an IP conflict, and can lead to network errors. Most DSL installations would use an ethernet switch, such as the part number 47611-8PT, instead of a router. The other option is to use the Version 3 router in "Bridge Mode". This option is detailed in Step 3.

1) Log in to the router. Instructions for logging in can be found here. Once logged in, you will see the screen pictured below.

2) Click on the “Setup Wizard” tab to open the "Host Settings" page shown below:

3) Enter the following HOST Settings

Host Name - choose the name for your router (i.e. Bob's Router) or leave as default
Time Zone - select your time zone
Daylight Saving - check the enable box to enable daylight savings and select the dates (optional; only important if you will be viewing log entries and firewall settings where exact time stamps are desired)
Function Mode -
- Select Router (default ) if using a modem that does not act as a router (typical for cable, not for DSL, FIOS, or satellite).
  - Click “Next” to move on to the WAN Mode Screen
  - PROCEED TO STEP 4
- Select "Bridge" for most DSL, FIOS, and satellite applications that use modems with built-in routing function.
  - PROCEED TO STEP 5

4) WAN Mode screen settings

Option #1: Auto-Detect (Default, preferred)
- Auto-Detect will automatically detect the settings from your modem
- Click the “Detect” button.
- When it finishes auto-detect click the “Next” button to move on to the DNS Server screen (Step 5).

Option #2: Manual Select - have this selected if you want to input your Internet Service Providers (ISP) information manually. You must have all necessary information from your ISP to use Manual Select option.
- If selecting Manual Select option, an addition set of options will appear.
- Proceed directly to Step 6 for manual configuration instructions.

5) DNS Settings (DNS Server Screen)

Option #1: If your ISP has not provided you with information for your DNS server (typical) click the “Finish” button to finish the setup. Your router setup is now complete and internet access should be available.

Option #2: Static DNS - check the enable box if your ISP assigned you a Static DNS server
- Primary DNS - enter the primary DNS number from your ISP
- Secondary DNS - enter the secondary DNS number from your ISP
- Click the “Finish” button to finish the Setup Wizard. Your router setup is now complete and internet access should be available.

6) Manual Set-up Options (continued from Step 4)

Once you select “Manual Select” a set of additional options will appear:
- Dynamic IP (Cable)
- Static IP (DSL)
- PPPOE (DSL)
- PPTP
- L2TP
- BigPond
- Russia PPPOE (Dual Access)
- Russia PPTP (Dual Access)
Dynamic IP should be selected for a standard cable internet installation. Select Dynamic IP, and click Next to move to thd DHCP Mode screen.

7) DHCP Mode Screen

Typical: Changes on this screen are not required unless specified by your ISP.
Manual option: MAC Cloning - if you want to clone your PC’s MAC Address
- Check the "Enable" box
- Click the “Clone MAC” button to Clone your PC’s MAC address or enter in one from your provider
Click the “Next” button to proceed.
Go to Step 5 to resume setup.

Setting up the 4-Port Internet Router (Version 3) for Cable Internet

1) Log in to the router. Instructions for logging in can be found here. Once logged in, you will see the screen pictured below.

2) Click on the “Setup Wizard” tab to open the "Host Settings" page shown below:

3) Enter the following HOST Settings

Troubleshooting: Internet Gateway /Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router suddenly stopped working

1. Unplug the power supply from the modem, the Internet Gateway /Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router and shut down your computer.

Leave the power off for all devices for approximately 30 seconds.

2. Restart each device in the following order:

Modem
Internet Gateway / 4-Port Gigabit Router
Computer

3. Test connection by opening a new internet browser

If there is still not connectivity, proceed to step 4.

4. Determine if a firmware upgrade is necessary:

To determine what version of the 47611-GT4 device you have, click here.

To determine what version of firmware is currently installed on the device, log into the router.
From the main menu, click on the "Status" folder, then the submenu "Status". This will display the screen that shows the current firmware version. Compare your current firmware version to the versions listed below. If you are not running the current firmware as shown below, follow the instructions for your specific device to upgrade.

47611-GT4 Version 3

*No firmware updates available at this time. This page will be updated if firmware is released in the future.

47611-GT4 Version 2

Instruction for downloading and installing firmware upgrade:

1. Go here and click on the link titled "4-Port Gateway Firmware v.1131
2. Save the file to your hard drive where it can be easily found (like the desktop)
3. Open a browser window and type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar
4. You will be asked to enter a user name and password. User name should be left blank. The password is "leviton" (all lowercase)
5. Click on "Tools" then on "Upgrade"
6. Click on the "Browse" option and choose the firmware file that was saved to the desktop.
7. Click "Start Upgrade".

After these steps are completed, the device will automatically restart. Once the device has restarted, you will be redirected to the main menu.

To check if the firmware upgrade was successful, click on the "Status" folder, then the submenu "Status". This will display the screen that shows the current firmware version. If you are still having problems connecting to the internet, please contact Leviton Tech Support at 1-800-824-3005.

I am unable to log into the Internet Gateway / Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router using the address 192.168.0.1

1. Check all physical connections between the computer, the Internet Gateway / Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router and the modem

It is helpful to connect the computer directly to the Internet Gateway / 4-Port Gigabit Router during setup.

2. Unplug the power supply from the modem, the Internet Gateway / 4-Port Gigabit Router and shut down your computer.

Leave the power off for all devices for approximately 30 seconds.

4. Restart each device in the following order:

Modem
Internet Gateway / 4-Port Gigabit Router
Computer

5. Once all devices are powered back up, try logging in again using the 192.168.0.1 IP address

6. If still unable to connect to 192.168.0.1, try using a different patch cord to connect between the computer and the Internet Gateway / 4-Port Gigabit Router

7. If there is still no connectivity, contact Leviton Tech Support: 1-800-824-3005

Will the Internet Gateway/ Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router work with a Satellite modem?

Satellite modems commonly have built-in routers (even when they appear to be 1-port modems). Configuring the Internet Gateway /Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router in a network with a pre-existing router will cause an IP conflict. To determine if your satellite modem has built-in routing capabilities, refer to the user guide for your modem or your service provider.

To remedy this issue, replace the Internet Gateway /Router / 4-Port Gigabit Router with an Ethernet Switch (part number 47611-5PT, 47611-8PT or 47611-5GB).
