Combing and Bundling CAT 6A cables

Combing and Bundling CAT 6A cables

Because of increased alien crosstalk (AXT) that occurs with strict combing or tightly bundling CAT 6A cable, Leviton and other organizations recommend that CAT 6A cables be installed loose or uncombed, or be placed in pathways with a "natural lay” (BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual).

We also recommend against bundling cable with tie-wraps that can degrade performance.

However, aesthetics are a factor in installs, and the trend in the industry is to comb the cable when it is exposed so that there are no “divers” or “emergers”, especially in the Telecommunications Room and in overhead installations in data centers. Combing, along with sequential fastening (e.g. bundled every 8"), is considered to be the worst-case scenario by

TIA standards.

Even with the knowledge of uncombed cable as a best practice, some customers (contractors and end users alike) still require their cable to be strictly combed. Fortunately, Leviton’s CAT 6A system — which includes connectors, cords, and patch panels — has been independently field tested to ensure 10G performance and surpass TIA performance criteria under strictly combed, worst-case conditions.

LEVITON

Things to know about first time CAT6A installs

Cat6A is becoming more in more common and there are a few things to know to help the first few installs go smoothly

First, you'll need to know how best to work with the cabling

Most 6A cable typically comes on reels, so be prepared with appropriately-sized rack or cart

Cable runs require more space for larger trays and conduit as well as bend radius and slack loop requirements

To prevent crushing, position the 6A cable on the bottom of the cable trays and limit bundles to 50

Use stronger, properly -sized anchors, threaded rods , and J hooks to support the extra weight throughout your runs

Space supports randomly between three and four feet apart to prevent sagging ( the spacing between supports needs to be random to avoid a harmonic build up, if supports are put evenly at 4ft for example a frequency harmonic can build up over the length of a cable run and cause signal issues)

Product documentation mentions that Alien Crosstalk is tested in a "6-around-1" configuration. Does this mean that my cable bundle size is limited in a Category 6A installation?

No, your cable bundle size is not limited. The factory and 3rd-party testing that is done for Category 6A Alien Crosstalk is done in a “worst case” 6-around-1 configuration (7 cables). The “one” cable in this configuration is called the” victim” or the “disturbed” cable. This is the cable where the noise is measured. The other 6 cables are called “disturbers”. They are held in close and constant proximity to the “victim” cable; typically by being Velcro-tied every eight inches for the full length of the run being tested.

Cables may be run in virtually any size bundles; 6, 12, or 24 are typical bundle sizes (because those sizes typically match up with the quantity of patch panel terminations). Field Alien Crosstalk testing should be run on the whole bundle, so for a 12-cable bundle the alien test would be an 11-around-1 configuration. The field test results for an 11-around-1 would typically be expected to be much better than the factory 6-around-1 test configuration, due to the random lay of the cables in the field installed 12-cable bundle vs. the tightly-bound nature of the factory test cable bundle.

The standards do not specify a minimum length, but 10 feet is recommended to avoid return loss and NEXT issues due to the higher signal frequency. Leviton is the only manufacturer to provide lifetime warranty coverage on a 10 foot length permanent link on certified installations, critical in data center applications.
